 In
2005, Mill Valley inspectors found that damaged sections of the upper steps,
slippage and separation could no longer be repaired productively. They reported
that the top flight was simply past its expected life cycle.
It was so bad;
the entire flight needed to be rebuilt...and soon. But the city had other
stairways in even worse condition and had a limited budget.
That's why, in 2007, the Dipsea Race Foundation took over the project and

 The Dipsea Race Foundation assumed responsibility of
rebuilding the weakening top section of the Dipsea steps in 2007 at a cost of
$160,000. Dipsea racers, former runners, and friends of the race helped finance
the rebuilding project by sponsoring individual, permanently inscribed steps.
For those who
appreciate the race and its history, this step sponsorship plan provided an
opportunity to contribute to the trail's preservation. Sponsoring a step also
created a most appropriate monument to those who love the race. The sponsor
chose the name or brief message to be engraved in the plaque that's embedded
into the riser or surface of each step.
Sponsorship donation was $1,000 per step and qualified as a
tax-deductible charitable contribution. The sponsorship program was a great
success. Due to the generosity of the sponsors, all of the steps have been sold.
Thank you for your continued support of The Dipsea Race, the trail’s
preservation, and The Dipsea Race Foundation.
